Gangstarr & Nice N’ Smooth “Dwyck” Live On Yo! MTV Raps
“Dwyck” was one of those songs everyone knew the words to. From my sister to the hardest hip hop head, every person who heard “Dwyck” could recite it. “Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is, I get more props and stunts like Bruce Willis.” Who could not remember those two bars from the coolest, smoothest, most relaxed, most monotone voice around? Greg Nice and Smooth Bee sandwiched Guru’s laid-back elegance with their signature energy to create one of my favorite hip hop songs of all time. Guru and Premier were magical. Hip hop at it’s true finest.
I remember the day my dad put me on to Jazzmatazz. The year was 1993 when I jumped in my dad’s car and heard “Loungin.” I remember watching Guru in an acapella freestyle session late one Sunday night at Halo once the music had stopped. My friend Michael Okeyo and I joined in and recited his lyrics to “Dwyck.” I remember walking past Guru one night on 21st Street on the way to Cheetah and stopping to give him respect. I remember the Columbia rain suit Guru wore at Summerjam ‘94 as he performed “Code Of The Streets” with such swag. Gifted Universal Rhymes Unlimited. Rest in peace.
