Bach Technology on Monday introduced MusicDNA, a new digital music file format intended to supplant MP3 by adding updateable lyrics, artwork, tour dates, videos and other content to the file.
Investors in the company include MP3 format inventor Karlheinz Brandenburg and 247 Inc., a company run by former Sony Music CEO Shigeo Maruyama.
The MusicDNA format is backwards compatible with MP3, meaning songs in the MusicDNA format will play on all MP3 players — including the iPod.
The additional content appears while the music file is playing on a free software player, and may be updated with new content from labels and artists whenever the player is connected to the Internet.
Bach said it is in talks with all the major labels, but so far has garnered support from independent labels including Beggars Group, Tommy Boy, Delta Records and Amiata Records.
Other partners include a number of digital music retailers and distributors, such as R2G (China), InProdicon (Sweden), Rebeat Digital (Germany), PeoplesMusicStore (U.K.) and CatchMedia (U.S.).
Bach plans to beta test the MusicDNA format with partners this spring before a full commercial rollout in the summer.
Apple recently introduced its own music-plus-data file format, iTunes LP, which bundles music videos, liner notes and artwork with album purchases.

Dries Van Noten Fall/winter 2010 Collection has just shown at Paris Fashion Week. Styled with plaid on plaid, check over check and stripe under stripe, the collection featured these two vests, reminiscent of ’90s Hip Hop fashion. I remember buying a quilted navy vest almost exactly like the second one here in sixth grade so I could look like Treach. The Army Navy sold the generics, and Merry Go Round sold the designer. Memories.

Created by Damir Doma in collaboration with Linda Farrow Projects, these sunglasses offer a new take on the classic wayfarer. The tortoiseshell frame is faintly rounded to create a fresh approach with the addition of a distressed chunky shiny nose bridge. I love ‘em.

My road manager, Marvin, and I spent a week in Gstaad earlier this month for a gig. We admired the landscape, browsed the boutiques, and made the party people dance.

Earlier this month, MySpace Music and I unveiled a new program entitled “Shuffleboard.” Curated by me and featured on the front page of MySpace.Com, “Shuffleboard” will feature themed playlists at least once a week.
“Shuffleboard” is your newest mixtape and your latest playlist. It is the clerk at your local record store that no longer exists, the curator of your music museum. “Shuffleboard” is your resident deejay. It is the soundtrack to your life, brought to you by me, DJ Cassidy, and special guests along the way. Listen, contribute, share, and most importantly, enjoy.
Click here to view my first three playlists, “Hot Cocoa & Marshmallows,” “Notes of Inspiration,” and “Pop Young Things (P.Y.T.’s).”

A cool new interpretation of the classic penny loafer. Cowhide loafers in navy blue suede with metallic burgundy leather across the toe and an off-white rubber sole. Fly.
